HOLYOKE — An invasive insect species harmful to plants and agriculture has been spotted in Holyoke. The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources recently reported that the spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) has been identified in the city. The state says to keep an eye out for large, gray insects, about 1 inch long, with black spots and red underwings. These lanternflies suck sap out of plant stems and branches, which can weaken and kill plants. This leads to plants oozing or weeping, and leaving a fermented odor that attracts other insects and promotes fungal growth.
